Ed Sheeran Early Life and Background

Edward Christopher Sheeran was born in Halifax, West Yorkshire on 17th February 1991. Though he grew up in a quiet market town in Suffolk, England called ‘Framlingham’. His childhood was one of an artistic nature. His father, John Sheeran was an art curator and his mother Imogen a culture publicist, though she later became a jewellery designer.

Both parents run an art consultancy business called Sheeran Lock. He has a brother called Matthew who became a professional music composer. This was the musical start of Ed’s life; when he was only four years old, he was joining his local church choir. His father would regularly take him to live music shows, and the one by Irish folk artist Damien Rice was the turning point.

Ed immediately started writing his own songs after watching Rice. As a teenager he attended Rishworth School, and later Thomas Mills High School in Framlingham Suffolk where he continued to hone his guitar playing and write songs. While a pupil he self released the EP The Orange Room in 2005, followed by the independently released albums Spinning Man and Ed Sheeran, and the album Want Some? In 2007.

None of these releases attracted much attention, but they helped him develop a discipline and work ethic that would influence all he did. When he was 14 he went off on a summer to London with guitar on his back and in complete confidence that he’d be able to find gigs. That instinct was right, but not quite how he imagined.

The London Years

In 2008, at 17, Sheeran moved to London permanently to focus on music full time. This led to a phase that most artists who dream of success might find completely demoralizing. He did hundreds of gigs in small venues, crashed at friends’ places and sometimes even slept in the Underground, besides recording and releasing independent EPs, effectively building a grassroots fanbase one show at a time.

The productive energy that he showed took him to Los Angeles in 2010, where he performed at a singer songwriter show. Being there Jamie Foxx, the American actor and comedian, recognized this extraordinary talent and not only invited Sheeran to use his personal recording studio but also allowed him to sleep on his couch for six weeks. Those six weeks of artistic liberty and motivation really enabled Sheeran para to write the songs and to believe in himself to the extent he was ready to take his next step.

In his homeland, he delivered the independent EP “No. 5 Collaborations Project” in January 2011, a work he started to test himself by penning with grime and hip hop artists. It was astonishing that it hit the number two slot on iTunes charts with no label support at all, also Elton John and Atlantic Records renowned. Sheeran signed with Atlantic later that year.
