Neeraj Chopra Early Life and Background

Neeraj Chopra was born in Khandra (a small agricultural village near the city of Panipat in Haryana state) on 24 December 1997. His father, Satish Kumar, is a farmer; his mother, Saroj Devi, is a homemaker. The family led a simple rural life, rooted in the traditions of Haryanvi farming culture.

Neeraj had a weight issue since childhood. He was very heavy for his age, a candidate for teasing with a low confidence. Instead of letting this stop him, his family encouraged him to get active. Neeraj was only about 11 years old when he stumbled upon the grounds of Panipat’s Shivaji Stadium and saw athletes under practised javelin throw. Something clicked.

He picked a javelin up for the first time and tossed it more than 40 metres, without one second of coaching. The athletes in the field looked and stared. One of them was a javelin thrower named Jaiveer Choudhary, who approached him and offered to train him.

That moment changed everything.

Family and Relationships

Neeraj is also very rooted to his origins. He credits his family, including two sisters in Khandra who remain close with him as his foundation during the roughest times of his career.
